by Irwin Shaw

The repeated thud of shovels into the hard ground accompanies the protests of several soldiers huddled together on a battlefield.  They are digging graves for their fallen comrades, grumbling about the stench of the rotting bodies.  Suddenly, six corpses rise from the earth and stand before the terrified soldiers.  The corpses will not lie down and be buried until their own complaints are heard.  It is an uprising of the dead.  Written after the First World War, Bury the Dead is a haunting and timely commentary on the violent conflict that seems to inevitably repeat, inflicting untold suffering upon each generation of humanity.  As various captains, generals and finally women in the lives of the fallen soldiers arrive to convince them to return to their graves so that the war can continue without any further commotion, the absurdity of the situation mirrors the corpse’s ringing indictment.
