After discussion with the crew, I came to a decision that Ragtime, the Musical will have an understudy cast.
There are many reasons for this decision, which include schedule conflicts & tour availability. The MAIN CAST of Ragtime (above) WILL STILL HAVE all 6 regular shows at the Palmdale Playhouse guaranteed.
However, for the Laguna Woods tour and the projected Palm Springs tour, the understudy cast would perform on the first and last shows of the tour, (Saturday morning, Sunday evening), and the primary cast would perform for the Saturday night and Sunday matinee shows on the tours.
I am also in negotiation with the Playhouse to ADD a Saturday matinee on the 2nd weekend in Palmdale to have an understudy show here in Palmdale! As you know, we were able to cut down hours of tech week during Fiddler on the Roof (2006), and were able to add a Saturday matinee the second weekend. I am looking at skipping the pick-up rehearsal 2nd week & at saving the Playhouse man-power for an understudy show on the 2nd Saturday afternoon. With the current friction between D.O.T. and the Playhouse, it may be hard to add a show, but if it works, the understudy cast would also perform 1 show here in Palmdale.
For rehearsals, the Ragtime cast will spend the hour rehearsing and learning blocking while all understudies will watch and take notes. At the end of each hour or block of time for learning a song, dance, or scene, the understudy cast will switch places and have 1 opportunity to rehearse what they saw.
During August, the understudy cast will have 1 opportunity per week to run the show, and 1 opportunity on the Palmdale Playhouse stage, (if we add the extra show). ANY time a lead has a conflict or cannot make the rehearsal, the understudy will take over for the missing cast member. It is then the understudy’s responsibility to meet with the lead and show the lead what he/she missed.

The first READ THRU rehearsal will be at Harald Krueger’s home THIS Friday, May 9th at 7:00pm where we will read through the scripts and all the music We begin promptly, so please be there at 7:00 or before. Attached is the complete rehearsal schedule for your convenience.
To get to Harald’s house, take the 14 freeway to Avenue K and turn west on Avenue K. Travel until you have reached 25th Street West and turn south on 25th West. Keep driving until you reach Harald’s house, which is where the sidewalk ends. He has a Spanish adobe exterior, a wooden wheel in the front and a circular driveway, though you may want to park on the street in front of his house. His address is_____________________.
Finally, all those involved in Oliver! , Chicago, My Fair Lady, or Diary of Anne Frank must prioritize those shows before Ragtime, but please give me a rehearsal schedule. Those involved in West Side Story may also do Ragtime as there should be hardly, if any, conflicts. However, if you commit to West Side Story, you must be 100% committed and will not be in the Ragtime cast for the Laguna Woods tour (schedule conflict), but can still be in the cast for Palmdale and the possible Palm Springs tour.
